The Importance of Silence

Have you ever asked a really great question in group only to be greeted with complete silence?  As you look around the room, some people are staring off into space and others avert their eyes as you try to meet their gaze?  You think to yourself, “Was it too difficult or what?  I thought it was a GREAT question!”  What you do next may determine a lot about how involved people will get in your group discussions.

The correct response from you is to… are you ready for it?!? DO NOTHING!  Really good questions take thought and require some silence.  Don’t jump in too fast! As the person in front of the group, 10 seconds might seem like an eternity, but to someone who hasn’t had the benefit of time to think about it ahead of time, 10 seconds is about the time it takes just to figure out the question let alone think about a response!

  Don’t be afraid of silence
